Editor and Media Flow Wishlist

These are the editor and media tickets that most affect my publishing routine. Fixing these would allow me to flow. These are roughly in order from the most to the least impactful on my personal flow. The first 6 are the ones I’d most like to see fixed.

Session notes: iOS app editor buttons – iPhone 6+

Three dots and Post are anxiously close

Having the Three dot menu right next to Post in the iOS 6.5 beta is nerve-wracking.

Swapping Post and the settings button locations requires rewiring my safeties and remapping hands/thumbs to flows. For reference, here’s the button arrangement before 6.5.

I’ll see how this new rhythm settles in, but right now I’m feeling the extra tap to get at preview and the reduced distance between preview flow and publication flow. This puts preview flow very close to publication, increasing anxiety.

I think this change requires flow like Medium’s app, where Next is confirmed with a Post trampoline that shows taxonomy and Publicize settings. This information is well-suited to the moment and appreciated. It reduces publication anxiety.

Cursor buttons

Now that I’m used to Ulysses app, I keep wanting in the keyboard button bar to be cursor buttons.

Editor, Forms: Using the form builder dialog to create an About page contact form, iPhone 6+

Testing https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/pull/1885 on an iPhone 6+.

This session adds a contact form to an About page. Other than removing Website, the default fields are used as is.This session demonstrates a preview bug that required abandoning and restoring the editor session. The form builder itself  behaved well.

Notes:

  • The editor opens with focus on the permalink slug field.
  • There are two cursors in the editor after the form placeholder is inserted.
  • This preview bug required abandoning and restoring the editor session.
  • This was done over a laggy Charles proxy, responsiveness is slow.
  • The media modal uses Insert as the button text when inserting new Media. The form builder uses Save. I expected Insert.
  • Using the pencil icon to both open and close details felt odd.
  • Ditto on https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/pull/1885#issuecomment-184548811

This screencast shows submitting the form. I submit the form, click go back, and then visit the backend to see if the submitted feedback shows there.

Form feedback doesn’t seem to be anywhere in the backend or in notifications, so I checked email. Here’s what the form feedback email looks like with Google Inbox on Macnchrome.

Editor, Preview: Preview obscured by masterbar and undismissable, iPhone 6+

The preview modal is undismissable on my iPhone 6+. Preview loads beneath the masterbar resulting in the dismiss button being obscured. Escaping the modal can mean abandoning editor changes and later restoring them.

Editor, Preview: Previewing sites that don’t allow iframes

Testing https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/pull/3291.

This site, test.wordpress.com, disallows iframes. Here’s what preview looks like in production.

The workaround is to hit the open in new window arrow box. This opens preview in a new tab/window. This forks flow, which is especially cumbersome on touch devices.

Opening in a new tab forks flow

Note that preview on the iPhone 6+ is beneath the toolbar, obscuring the controls. Also, Preview exhibits scroll bleed.

Here is preview with 3291.

There is some funkiness here, perhaps theme specific, in the tablet preview mode. The hamburger menu pushes down content and it doesn’t close.

Clicking hamburger doesn’t close the menu.

This screen also exhibits scroll bleed.

My mobile testing setup is a mess right now, so I can’t test local changes on iPhone 6+. Instead, I’ll take this opportunity to plug xip.io compat. 🙂

Editor, Galleries: Publish a gallery from iPhone 6+

Broken images during gallery upload. Duplicate images. Broken preview. Stuck scrolling. Multiple taps to actuate some buttons.
