Building a flow sharing vocabulary

Live dogfooding, flow mapping, flow sharing, and user journeys can be misread, leading to defensive exchanges when what you intend is to share what actually happened to you as a data point and a glimpse of perspective. Some signaling is needed. I’ve taken to using hashtags in chats, comments, and post taxonomy to convey some context. Here are ones I’ve tried. I often prefix these with ‘user-‘, but lately I’ve been letting them stand without.

And as seen on Calypso’s /help/contact/ screen:

I’ll update the  glossary on make/test to contain and explain the terms not already over there. Some of these terms come from Design for Real Life, which I recommend to all.

Scenes from an iPhone 6+ photo publishing session

These are scenes from a publishing session on Horizon with a post having two individual images and a featured image.

Featured image is zoomed and pixellated in preview

Featured image is zoomed and pixellated

Panning that results in flicker and jumping. Exiting the editor and previewing again showed a slightly better view.

Funky offline styling

Funky styling around Offline indicator

Stuck offline publishing

Tapping Publish while offline left me stuck here:

Publish button remains inactive and Saving… persists after publishing while offline

Failed publication notice

Here’s what the editor looks like after failed publication.

“Publishing of post failed.” notice shows at the bottom of the screen after the featured image

Detached dot overlay

The dot icon that overlays the pencil when loading/offline/syncing (under what conditions does this appear) detaches when attempting to scroll.

“Dot” masterbar overlay detaches when scrolling

Below the fold confirmation

The post published confirmation runs offscreen and is obscured by the word counter.

“Post published on…” confirmation shows at the bottom of the screen, beneath the featured image, with the second line running offscreen resulting in an obscured View Post button.

Inline image toolbar

Tapping an image brings up both the inline image toolbar and the cut|copy bar.

Both the inline image toolbar and the inline cut|copy bar show on tap.

Sometimes, tapping an image doesn’t show the image toolbar.

Only the cut|copy toolbar shows in this instance

Gallery preview and scrolling

Truncated preview with stuck scrolling

Stuck gallery preview scrolling:

Media scrolling:

Scroll bleed

Here, the underlying layer shows through at the bottom while scrolling. Classic #scroll-bleed.

I had to back out of editor sessions and do page reloads to complete the post. #frustrated

The inline image toolbar has been misbehaved on iOS for the duration of its existence. The experience is a cluster of #painpoints that leave you  #confused #frustrated and #discouraged.

Stuck gallery preview scrolling and preview truncation are gallery flow killers on both desktop and mobile.

Seeking help through 2fa and ad blockers

While seeking how to contact support from a Calypso session, I ran into 2fa.

AFAICT, the only way to /help is  through /me, which has an additional later of authenticaton. If I’m looking for help, 2fa probably won’t be welcome.

Once through 2FA, I clicked the Contact Us button and saw this.

This page never loads

I stared at this for awhile, wondering what was going on. I finally brought up a console to see what could be seen.

Screen Shot 2016-04-12 at 10.25.50 PM

olark is blocked. I use Ghostery and block pretty much everything, everywhere.

I can’t remember if olark was blocked by default or if I manually blocked it . I might have blocked it manually because the live chat ui in wp-admin bugs me.

Allowing olark allows /help/contact/.
